Creator Joseph Denovan Adam, (Artist)
DescriptionThese inquisitive Heilan’ Coos are a familiar sight in the Scottish countryside, beloved by locals and tourists alike. They were a favourite subject for the artist who created this atmospheric painting, Joseph Denovan Adam. Here, the artist has captured the essence of these wonderful beasts. A brief ray of sunshine picks out the warm reds and browns of their rugged, thick coats, before the next rain shower descends.
Although Adam was born in Glasgow, he grew up in London where he studied at the Royal College of Art. He often journeyed to the Highlands to paint with his father, who was a landscape artist. These trips inspired and encouraged him to move north, first to Crieff and then to Stirling. Adam set up a school of animal painting on his small farm at Craigmill near Stirling in 1887, using his own herd as life models for his students.
The Highland cattle you see here are the more fashionable cousins of black cattle, the native breed of Scotland. Small, sturdy, and sure-footed, black cattle were happy to brave the winter snows and able to graze on rough and even marshy ground. For centuries, the trade in these cattle was vital to the Highland economy. Every autumn they were taken by drovers south and east to the cattle sales in places like Stirling and Doune, where they were sold on and fattened up for the English markets.
