It is inspired by the life of local landowner Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham and takes its title from his reply when asked to apologise for swearing in the House of Commons – “I Never Withdraw!" Cunninghame Graham was a writer, traveller and politician. A lifelong adventurer, whose experiences would not look out of place in a Hollywood movie: gold prospector, friend to Buffalo Bill, socialist MP and one of the fathers of Scottish Nationalism. The window tells the story of his life and adventures. Cunninghame Graham’s beloved horses feature centre stage. These, with the Sol de Mayo (Sun of May) shining in the sky, represent his years as a gaucho on the Argentinian ranches. The horses are flanked by two roundels: on the left a Moroccan inspired tile hints at the time he travelled incognito through that country; on the right a delicate passionflower, symbol of Paraguay. Cunninghame Graham wrote an account of the Jesuits’ experiences there during the 18th century. The two figures in the foreground represent causes which remain just as relevant today as they were during Cunninghame Graham’s lifetime. The Sioux reflects his criticism of the US government's brutal treatment of them in Dakota. The words ‘No DAPL’ bring this up to date, referencing the Dakota Access Pipeline protests that began in 2016. His involvement in the historic matchgirls' strike in London in 1888 and stance against the sexual harassment of women are present too, in the figure of the young woman. Its relevance today is highlighted on the banner with the phrase #MeToo. Pinkie Maclure is a self-taught artist inspired by medieval stained glass. Her aim is to create beautiful work with a serious message, which questions human behaviour through her portrayal of controversial and often darkly humorous stories.
