TitleWest Garden
Creator William Crozier, (Artist)
DescriptionThe title of this painting, West Garden, gives us a clue to the subject but does not do justice to the vibrant energy with which it was painted by William Crozier. Describing himself in 1964 as a painter of landscapes, his work reflects neither realism nor impressionism and instead uses intense colour to convey emotions in a form of abstract expressionism.
West Garden is ferocious: the paint laid down on the canvas with energetic brushstrokes; the colours dramatic and vivid. The intense blues of the sky perhaps indicate that evening draws near – dusk was Crozier’s favourite time of day.
William Crozier was born in Glasgow to Irish parents and studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1949-53. He went on to spend time in Paris and Dublin before settling in London, where he soon found success as an artist. Aligning himself with European art and thought, he was inspired by the existentialism of the French philosophers Sartre and de Beauvoir. The idea that every man is responsible for his own freedom meant for Crozier that each piece of work was a totally new challenge.
Crozier combined painting with teaching and exhibited his work all over Britain and Europe. He felt a great connection to his Irish roots and lived there for large parts of the year. He became an Irish citizen in 1973 and was an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy.
